STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- "Still Life: Paris by Night," is the theme of Meals on Wheels of Staten Island's third annual Carriage Ball to be held on Friday, Oct. 29 with cocktails at 7:30 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing to the music of Head Over Heels at The Vanderbilt, South Beach. Meals on Wheels of Staten Island, Inc. is a private not-for-profit agency whose mission is to provide two nutritious meals each day to those 60 years of age or older who can no longer shop for or prepare their own meals. The price is reasonable and the service is reliable.

Referrals for service are made by phone and/or online and meal delivery can begin in 24 hours in an emergency, or several days in a non-emergency situation. A home visit assessment by a Meals on Wheels nurse is made within a week of the referral. Reassessments are made every six months. Sources for referrals are varied: the potential client, neighbor, relative, friend, clergy, or related agency serving the community. To be eligible, clients must have either long or short-term disability/illness, which prevents them from shopping for food and preparing meals. They must not have access to a congregate meal site. Persons without working refrigeration or storage facilities are also eligible.
