February is American Heart Month.
Heart disease - also called cardiovascular disease - is a simple term used to describe several problems related to plaque buildup in the walls of the arteries, or atherosclerosis. As the plaque builds up, the arteries narrow, making it more difficult for blood to flow and creating a risk for heart attack or stroke. Other types of heart disease include heart failure, an irregular heartbeat - or arrhythmia - heart valve problems.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and the number one killer of women. It claims the lives of nearly 500,000 American women each year, yet women are not paying attention. Women should know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk.
Here are some tips to take action to improve your heart health:
- Eat a healthly low fat diet and consume lots of fruits and vegetables.
- Lose excess weight. Take your medications.
- Visit your doctor to have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked.
- Follow a regular exercise routine.
Meals on Wheels of Staten Island welcomes new volunteers Cindy Brennan, Loretta Cavataio, Diane Cicero- Joyce, Gregory Kopp, Ben Pistilli, Mary Senk, Olga Shkolna, George Stalzer, Mary and Richard Woerner and Jim
Wynne.
Please don't forget to submit your monthly delivery logs to Roseann.
